AN EARNEST APPEAL

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

4th June 1908 was a memorable day to be written in Golden letters in the history of Kumta of Uttar Kannada District. A day on which our revered Swamiji of our Gokarn Parthagali Jeevottam Math H.H.Shrimad Indirakant Teerth Swamiji blessed the pupils and the teachers and opened a new chapter in the field of Secondary Education. This is the full-fledged first private high school of this District and was named as “New English School”, Kumta to distinguish it from Kumta municipal A.V.School, which taught the pupils up to the then 5th standard.

The visionaries like the Late Rao Saheb N.S.Kamat, the Late Rao Bahaddur P.N.Pandit of Sirsi, the Late Rao Saheb Ramachandra Anna Pai, the Late Pandurang Anna Pai, the Late Gopal Subbayya Shanbhag and others made a drive and collected funds for the buildings, furniture and other basic needs of the school. A fine private bungalow with the panoramic surroundings on the top of a hillock owned by the Late John Smith Chrystal, A Scottish Cotton Merchant was donated to this school as a memorable gift. Six rooms were newly constructed one each by the Late Rao Bahaddur P.N.Pandit, the Late Venkatrao Sonde of Sirsi, the Late Shreenivasappa Sonde of Sirsi, the Late Rao Saheb Ramachandra Anna Pai, the Late Pandurang Anna Pai and the Late Gopal Subbayya Shanbhag of Kumta.

The school was renamed as “GIBB HIGH SCHOOL” as a token of deep gratitude to Mr. M.C.Gibb, the then Commissioner of Southern Division for his help in getting recognition and bringing this school under Grant-in-Aid in 1911. The dire necessity of a hostel for the pupils hailing from all the corners of the District was felt by Rao Bahaddur P. N. Pandit and constructed an ideal hostel, first of its kind accommodating 100 students with boarding facilities at his own cost, on the prime land of 7 acres donated by the Late Pandurang Anna Pai on behalf of his joint family. The Late Madhav Ram Shanbhag, Kalbagkar has donated a prime land to the society. The need of a Hall-cum-Auditorium was met by the Late Baron Vishnoobab Dhempe, Goa, by donating liberally for constructing a Hall-cum-Auditorium which was named “Dhempe Hall” in his honour which was a centre of all cultural activities.

As a measure of permanent organization, the pioneers founded “The Kanara Education Society, Kumta” on fully democratic setup and registered it in 1915.
Gibb High School, Kumta grew very fast, attracting students from neighbouring Talukas of the Districts by its grand results, good discipline and high tone of education and hostel facility. The strength of the students rose very high in forties. The problem of accommodation was again keen; but it was solved under the able guidance and leadership of the Late Rao Saheb Annappa Ramachandra Pai and the Late Mhalappa Bappayya Pai, the then Chairman of the Governing Body of the K.E.Society, Kumta. The Late Martu Madhav Pai and the Late J.V.Gavaskar, the then Head Masters of the school, approached the donors like the Late Timmappa Vaman Balgi, Bombay and the Late Achut Anant Pai of Culcutta who helped in donating rooms and further donations helped us to construct 8 more rooms.

In the sweet memory of the Late Rao Saheb N.S.Kamat, his kith and kins helped to construct a well planned and well equipped laboratory.

To commemorate the successful completion of 50 springs of the school, the ‘GOLDEN JUBILEE’ was celebrated in 1959. The function was celebrated under the presidency of Dr.Rajendra Prasad, the first Rashtrapathi, in the good offices of Dr B. M.Pai, the then Chairman of the K.E.Society. In the memoirs of Golden Jubilee Celebration, an auditorium was constructed in the name of Dr Rajendra Prasad.
